In airline psychomotor evaluations (such as COMPASS CCT), you fly a simulated transport jet Primary Flight Display (PFD). Continuously scan and coordinate all four primary flight instruments:
The center artificial horizon separates sky (blue) and ground (brown). The solid white center cursor represents your aircraft wings and stays fixed in the center, resting directly on the horizon line in level flight. When banking right, the artificial indicator moves to the right to reflect your bank angle degrees. Keep wings level to maintain heading; pitch up or down on the pitch ladder to control climb and descent.
The vertical rolling tape shows calibrated airspeed (KT). The center white box indicates current speed. Match your speed with the Magenta Target Bug (145 KT).
The vertical rolling altitude drum displays current altitude in feet. Maintain level flight at the commanded Magenta Altitude Bug (2,900 FT). Pitch up to climb; pitch down to descend.
The bottom tape shows magnetic heading. Turn to align the lubber needle with the Heading Bug (320°). Beneath it is the slip/skid balance bar: adverse yaw displaces the ball during turns. Coordinate rudder to keep the ball centered ("step on the ball").
The simulator supports dual-hand desktop keyboard controls and mobile/touch dual D-pad thumbsticks:
Observe the left airspeed tape. If current speed is 138 KT and target bug is 145 KT, hold W to advance throttle. As speed approaches 145 KT, release W to let airspeed settle onto the magenta notch.
Pull back gently on the elevator stick using ↓ Arrow to place the aircraft pitch boresight 3°–5° above the horizon. Monitor the vertical speed indicator. As altitude rolls through 2,870 FT (within 30 FT of target 2,900 FT), ease the stick forward (↑ Arrow) to capture 2,900 FT.
Tap → Arrow to bank right toward heading 320°. Notice adverse yaw pulls the magenta slip ball to the left! Immediately press D to kick right rudder and center the ball between the white index lines (“step on the ball”).
At heading 315° (5° before target), roll wings level (← Arrow) and release rudder. Keep scanning: ADI horizon level, airspeed at 145 KT, altitude at 2,900 FT, heading at 320°, and slip ball centered.
Choose your evaluation duration. Standard airline cadet screening uses 3:00 continuous tracking under active atmospheric turbulence:
The system records tracking deviation at 60 Hz across four flight axes: Airspeed Hold (±KT), Altitude Hold (±FT), Heading Hold (±°), and Rudder Slip Coordination. Scoring above 85% earns an Exceptional • Airline Ready benchmark tier.
